    System and method for clinically assessing motor function
    The present invention relates to methods and systems for assessing and diagnosing motor conditions using indices derived from computational analysis of a digitized drawing sample of a spiral. It is an improvement of the invention disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 6,454,706, and adds new indices and depictions thereof. Such indices may be used individually or in combinations amongst themselves or with indices disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 6,454,706 to evaluate and assess motor function. As such, in non-limiting embodiments, the new information may be used in diagnostic techniques relative to an expert generated standard or, alternatively, may be used to monitor a subject's function over time or as a result of treatment, where indices or their combinations are compared between drawing samples obtained from a single subject or a group of subjects. The methods and systems of the invention have application in both the clinical and research communities.

    System and method for clinically assessing motor function
    In particular, the present invention relates to a computerized system and method for clinically assessing motor function comprising correlating geometric indices, computed from digital information obtained from a geometric shape drawn by a subject to be evaluated, with a rating score derived using a "standard of reference" generated by one or more clinical expert. Interpretation is thereby rendered more objective and consistent. Furthermore, the test may be administered and interpreted by physicians who are not skilled or experienced in evaluating motor disorders, for example general practitioners or pediatricians who are not certified in the practice of neurology. The present invention therefore provides a means for evaluating persons early in the course of disease, and for screening patients for motor dysfunction or, in the case of children, disorders of motor development.

    Tracking instrumentation for measuring human motor control
    Tracking instrumentation for measuring human motor control includes a load cell or potentiometer for converting a force or position to an electrical signal. An analog-to-digital converter periodically samples the electrical signal and converts it into a series of digital words representing a force amplitude value. A computer system includes a monitor for displaying a tracking element, the position of the tracking element controlled by the digital words. The computer system further includes means for displaying a tracking pattern on the monitor and plotting scaled values on the monitor superimposed on the tracking pattern. The values are plotted so that the user operating a handgrip can adjust the handgrip in an attempt to track the pattern across the monitor. The system further includes means and methods for recording and analyzing the tracking performance data and for objectively scoring the tracking data.

    System and method for detection and quantification of Parkinson's disease
    The invention provides a system for detection and quantification of Parkinson's disease, including a substantially planar digitizer tablet fixedly mounted on a base plate and capable of translating graphic information into digital information displayable, via a computer, as graphic information on a monitor screen viewable by the subject to be tested, and a handle to be gripped and steered by the subject. The handle is fixedly attached to, and supported by, a guide providing the handle with two degrees of freedom in translation in a plane above, and substantially parallel to, the plane of the digitizer tablet. The system further includes a stylus moving together with the handle and adapted to produce signals sensible by the digitizer tablet, and means to produce on the monitor screen a model path of a predetermined shape and size, as well as a target to be tracked by the subject, the target moving at a predetermined speed along the model path. A method for detection and quantification of Parkinson's disease is also described and claimed.

    3-dimensional digitizer for skeletal analysis
    A method of performing 3-dimensional skeletal analysis on a patient using an apparatus which includes a digitizer, the digitizer being adapted to accept either a scanning digitizer tip or a point digitizer tip, includes the steps of placing the patient in a variety of positions relevant to musculoskeletal problems and performing a series of rolling scans, with the scanning digitizer tip and single point landmark digitizations of musculoskeletal landmarks, with the point digitizer tip to obtain 3-dimensional skeletal data. The data is analyzed in order to provide clinically relevant 3-dimensional information relating to musculoskeletal quantities and imbalances. An apparatus for carrying out the method includes an upright column support and a retractable column support movable along the support column for supporting the patient. A digitizer measures the position of a point, or a group of points, on the patient's body in 3-dimensional space. The digitizer includes a plurality of rotatable transducers and a plurality of link members linking the rotatable transducers. The digitizer is connected at one end to the support column and has a free end. The free end of the digitizer is adapted to accept a digitizer tip. The apparatus also includes a computer and the output of the digitizer is connected to the computer whereby to provide data to the computer for computing the position of the point or group of points on the patient's body in 3-dimensional space.
